My visit and interview at Brier Special School

Today I visited a local school and did two assemblies, reading my ‘Counting Springer Spaniels’ book, first with key stage one, then with key stage two children. It was a fabulous place to visit. The friendly staff made me feel at ease and the children participated well in the counting of the Springer Spaniels in my book. We showed the amounts on our hands too. However, the best part about the visit were the amazing questions the children asked! Here are a few of those questions and the replies I gave.
Who is your favourite author?
Probably JK Rowling as I love Harry Potter. I also like Lee Child who writes about Jack Reacher.
How long have you been an author?
Since July last year. I was off work as I was very poorly, so I decided to write a book.
Did you do the illustrations?
Absolutely not, I am terrible at drawing! I sent stick dog pictures, and the illustrators did them for me. You can’t be good at everything!
How long did it take to write the book?
I will be honest, the Springer one took me ten minutes because I know them really well, as I have had two. The others, I had to research, as I haven’t had those ones, and my friends gave me ideas so they took longer.
How long did it take to make the book?
About 7 months from when I sent it in to when it was completely made. I sent my rhymes to the publisher- Austin Macauley- they agreed to publish it. I sent pictures and the illustrators drew the pictures for me. I then asked them to change a few things and add the bright colours. I also explained how I wanted it set out. Once completed, they printed it and produced the book.
Are you still a teacher?
Yes, I'm in Reception, at the moment, but I have taught all year groups up to year 6.
Have you written any other books?
Yes, I have written 'Counting Cockapoos' and 'Counting Beagles' too. I will show you them.
Which is your favourite book?
My Springer one as Bella is in there and I love her to bits.
Are you going to write about other dogs?
I have written about Dachshunds, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Labradors so far.
Can you write about Huskies? German Shepherds, French Bulldogs and Pugs?
Yes, I will do my best! It might be next year though!
Are you going to write about music or toys?
I will probably stick to animals first. I have written my cats book and sent that off to be published so that will be my next book.
Why do dogs like mud?
You tell me! I don’t know! I think they might like to cool down when it’s a hot day, but they get so filthy.
Can we help you write your books?
Anyone could be an author. You could be an author and write your own books. I am from Dudley and went to school locally so that shows that you could be an author if you wanted to.

It was a fabulous visit. I really enjoyed it.
